What Can Women Get Away With As 'Professional' Dress?
Jennifer Barnett Reed has an article from last week's Arkansas Times on what should constitute a professional wardrobe for a woman who wants to still look stylish, especially if she's under 40. The article sites a couple of studies and a lot of testimonials from local women in Little Rock about their personal style of dress for work. A bit of a disclaimer needs to be made here that may solve some confusion. They interview women from two restaurants on President Clinton Ave, down the street from the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and the University of Arkansas' Clinton School of Public Service, where the standard uniform for women are tank-tops. Clinton Ave, before they built the Clinton Library there and changed the name, was (and still is) the home to some prominent Downtown business and shops...and a lot of bars. You're just going to have to go along with it. Insert you're own Clinton joke here if it makes you feel better... The issue on professional dress boils down to youth. Younger women, for various reasons listed, aren't dressing in a way many older professional women consider 'professional.' But they're not getting slammed for their fashion, because part of the problem is women's 'fashion' and a double standard when compared to men's professional 'fashion. - What's Provocative?
